Baroque Mass from the heart of the jungle

In 1717, an Italian baroque composer travelled across the southern Atlantic Ocean towards an almost unknown destination. In the middle of the South American jungle he created dozens of compositions, but later they disappeared.
In the 1970s, when restoring a Bolivian church, a large number of manuscripts were found. Among these was the Mass that will be performed in Turku Cathedral on Epiphany 2013.

Revival of the first passion performance in Finland

In 1613, in Erfurt, Germany, a St Matthew Passion, composed by the local church musician Melchior Vulpius, was published. During the next decades the music spread also to the Nordic countries and it thus became the fountainhead of the passion tradition in Finland. Based on early historical documents it can be said that the passion that was performed in a worship service in Turku Cathedral in 1672 was this work.

The Passion and its historical background in Turku have inspired the Musicians of the King's Road to offer the public the opportunity to hear this interesting piece
in the year of its 400th anniversary.

Messa à 5 concertata con strumenti
Sinfonia avanti il Chirie da Morti
Requiem
- first performances in Finland

Martin's Church, Turku
Saturday 2 November, 2013 at 8 p.m.

Giacomo Antonio Perti was an Italian composer of the Baroque period and maestro di cappella of San Petronio, the monumental basilica in Bologna. He held the post for an unprecedented 60 years and became the greatest name of the Bologna school.

Giacomo Antonio Perti's Requiem might have been performed during the composer's lifetime, although no indication of any performance has been found. The surviving manuscript is an old copy, and no conclusions regarding performances can be drawn based on it, either. It is therefore quite likely that the performance of the work in Finland is at the same time
its first performance in modern times.

The concert will be conducted by Michele Vannelli who is the current maestro di cappella of the basilica of San Petronio and the direct successor of Giacomo Antonio Perti.
